SMR is happy (and proud) to introduce a one-of-a-kind tool to view your favorite motorcycle roads - fly-through them in 3D! Two dimensional maps work well to give you a sense of the twisty-ness and length of a ride, but the third dimension really gives a level of realism that a map just doesn't provide. This is particularly evident in mountain and canyon roads.
At the top of every map select the "3D Fly-Through" tab. Once the window is loaded press the play button to start the fly-through movie.
Play the small sample below to see what we mean (the fly-throughs on the map pages will be full size) - SoCal riders should be very familiar with this road):
A couple of notes:
- To get a sense of the pacing, we suggest you first view a ride that you are familiar.
- You can also use the slider to move to different points in the ride.
- There is a slight pause (about 2 secs) at the begining of the ride to give Google Earth time to load. It may take longer, however, depending your internet connection speed - so you may notive the scenes improving as the ride progresses.
- This requires the Google Earth browser plugin which is currently only available for Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, and Internet Exploerer. If you don't alreay have it installed, you'll be first prompted to do so.
- We tried to make the fly-through as smooth (and realistic) as possible (e.g. faster on the straights and slower in the curves) but Google also applies its own smoothing algorithm so there are occasional strange camera view occurrences.
We've enabled the fly-throughs on all US road and adventure rides - international rides will be coming shortly.
